Wheellock Pistols - Blank Firing

A pair of reproduction Wheellock Pistols produced by Oak Arms Ltd. Unfortunately only one photograph survives of this beautiful set of wheellock pistols, made as blank firing.

The Wheellock also written, wheel-lock or wheel lock, was the next development in firearms ignition methods after the matchlock and is therefore the first self-igniting firearm. The lock uses a rotating steel wheel to provide ignition. Developed around the beginning of the 16th century, it was used alongside the matchlock and was later superseded by the snaphaunce in the mid 1500's and the flintlock at the beginning of the 17th century.
